Have you ever wondered how to grow and care for dahlias? It’s actually extremely easy. Dahlia’s are one of the most popular flowers in the world. They are perennials and are native to Central America and Mexico. They are actually in the same family as the chrysanthemum and sunflower plants. They come in nearly every color with the exception of blue! In some parts of the world Dahlia’s are grown as annuals but sometimes too cold for them to survive the winters. You can, of course dig the tubers up and store them indoors if you happen to live in a region that has harsh winters. I’m lucky enough to live in an area where they come up every year all by themselves.

Dahlias are extremely popular as potted plants, garden plants & often used in wedding bouquets & centerpieces. If you’ve always loved them and wondered how to grow them, here are some tips!

Instructions
1) purchase dahlia tubers
2) plant 5 inches or more deep in a well-draining pot and start indoors late spring (do not water until sprouts are seen above the soil surface)
3) move outdoors and place in the ground or in a large pot, ensure the location is full sun & has protection from the wind
4) plant each tuber 1-3 feet apart depending on how large the variety of flower is
5) fertilize with a vegetable fertilizer once a month during it’s growing season
6) if you live in a climate that does not have harsh winters you may leave the dahlia in the soil year round, if your winters are harsh you must dig up the tubers before the first hard freeze and store indoors
