Tradescantia zebrina plants are extremely beautiful and easy to care for. They can grow almost anywhere in your home and will change color depending on how much light they receive. Indirect lighting will cause the leaves to turn green with bright purple on the underside of the leaves while bright lighting will cause the colors to fade to pastel hues of mint green and pale magenta. Perhaps the most beautiful aspect of this plant is the fact that it sparkles and glitters in the sun. These plants are naturally sparkly and almost iridescent.

Tradescantia zebrina gets its name from the zebra-like stripes that appear on its leaves. These sparkly stripes almost look painted on and are quite extraordinary. It’s known as a fast-growing resilient ground cover plant but is quite easy to care for indoors and does lovely in hanging baskets. Its vines are fragile and like to be propped up on window sills or bookshelves. Its flowers are gorgeous shades of white and lavender.

Tips: It’s easy to propagate tradescantia zebrina from a cutting. They can also grow for many years in a vase of water. Although it is possible to grow them in the water they prefer soil and will do better in a well-draining soil that is kept moist but not too wet. Growing in the soil will produce stronger leaves and vines than growing in water. If your plant starts to look droopy or loses its leaves try moving it to a brighter location for a few months until it is revived.  A wonderful zero waste organic fertilizer to encourage blooms is EarthPods Cactus & Succulent Plant Food.
