The next time you purchase green onions at the grocery store, remember that you can pot them when you get home and they will grow forever. You will be so amazed when you see that you can grow endless green onions!
Green onions, also known as scallions or spring onions are a type of vegetable which have a taste similar to onions but much milder. Their relatives include chives, shallots, garlic, leeks, and Chinese onions. They are easy to grow indoors all year round and require very little care to flourish.
Instructions
1) purchase a bundle of green onions
2) place roots in water until they have grown at least one inch long, change the water out daily (I use a mason jar)
3) pot green onions in a small pot with soil and lean the stalks against a window or kitchen wall until they have rooted in the soil and can stand up on their own
4) trim onions from the top and leave rooted
Tips: make sure to choose a pot with a hole in the bottom so that the soil can drain after waterings, keep moist but not soggy. Trim from the top and always leave at least 4-5 inches of green onion attached to the roots. You never want to cut it all the way to the soil, or it will die. After harvesting green onion stems place them in a cup of water inside the fridge to slow the wilting process.
