Did you know you can grow herbs from a cuttings? It’s so easy. I have successfully rooted basil, oregano and baby dill recently and I wanted to share my secrets with you. I am currently experimenting with rooting rosemary, thyme, cilantro also! I will keep you all posted once I get those rooting! I’m growing some spearmint from seed but would love to try to root that too soon!
Instructions for Growing Herbs from Cuttings
- gather fresh bunches of herbs from your garden, a friend’s garden or your local grocery store
- place herb bunches in a small mason jar or vase and add a few inches of water, place in a brightly lit window
- swap the water out with fresh water daily (pour the old water into other plants)
- wait 1-8 weeks until roots emerge. Most cuttings will root in under 2 weeks.
- after roots are 2 inches long they are ready to be planted in a pot with some soil and an eco-friendly fertilizer
- continue this process until you have endless herbs!
Tips: you have to be really patient. Even if they turn yellow they might still grow roots! Don’t give up! It’s easiest to do in spring and summer since the lighting is usually brighter. I tried chives but had no luck and I think you need the base of the chive to root it properly!
