Have you ever purchased or been gifted a beautiful orchid but it never reblooms again? Have you tried everything under the sun to get an orchid to bloom? Here are some tips to keep your orchid blooming often.
Phalaenopsis orchids or moth orchids are one of the most popular orchids available for purchase. They have long-lasting flat flowers that bloom from one or more flowering stem. They are native to many areas including Australia, India, and Southeast Asia. Once you discover how to get an orchid to bloom you can enjoy their spectacular flowers year-round!
Instructions
1) place the orchid in a northern or southern facing window, year-round
2) make sure the orchid has both an inner and outer pot. The inner pot should have a hole in the bottom that drains and the outer pot should not have a hole in the bottom.
2) water the plant when the orchid bark mix is dry, once a week or once every week 1/2, sprinkle fertilizer on top of the inner pots bark and then fill the entire inner pot up with water. Let the inner pot rest inside the outer pot (filled with water) for 1/2 hour, remove the inner pot, and rest on the counter to ensure excess water has drained off. Place inner pot back inside of the outer pot and then put the orchid back in the window.
Tips: tying the stem to a bamboo stick or some type of upright stick can help to ensure that the flowers are not drooping into the leaves, but it’s an optional step. A wonderful zero waste organic fertilizer to encourage blooms is EarthPods Orchid Plant Food.
