Making Homemade Almond milk is incredibly easy! You can purchase raw almonds in bulk using cotton muslin bags. Almond milk can be used as a milk substitute in any recipe, it tastes delicious and is 100% vegan. Best of all, making your own almond milk will save you a ton of money at the checkout line. Did you know that the plastic lids that come on almond milk cartons are not recyclable and go directly to a landfill? Almonds are estimated to have a carbon footprint 10 times smaller than that of dairy milk.
Ingredients
1 cup of raw almonds
1 cup of water
Instructions
1) add 1 cup of raw almonds to a large bowl and fill with enough water to cover the almonds. Making sure there is room for the almonds to expand, cover the bowl and place in the fridge for 24 hours
2) rinse the almonds and strain off any excess water
3) place the almonds into a food processor (fill no more than halfway up)
4) add an equal amount of water to the food processor as you have almonds & pulse for several minutes
5) pour almond milk/almond mixture over a metal sieve and into a Bormioli Rocco Glass Jar or mason jar, separating out the almond pulp
6) store in your refrigerator or freezer (if you place in your freezer leave room for the milk to expand)
Tips: If you like your almond milk to be less thick you can stir more water in at the end. Reserve the leftover almond pulp to make baked almond crumbs. If you want to add flavor to your almond milk try adding a dried date to the food processor and a few drops of vanilla extract. You could even add cacao powder if you want to make chocolate almond milk.
